ABOUT THE STAMP
GB QUEEN VICTORIA, Black Penny Plate 1b, R-D, Scrape left Margin, Star WhiteFlaw, Re-Cut:
This is well-documented variety of the 1840 Great Britain 1d Penny Black fromPlate 1 (specifically the repaired state, Plate 1b), lettered R-D. This particular stamp position is highly sought after by collectors for its distinctiveprinting varieties and the "repair" work visible on the plate.
Key Identification Features for Plate 1b, R-D:
R-D Lettering: The check letters "R" (left) and "D" (right)in the bottom corners designate its position: the 18th row (R) and the 4th column(D) on the original sheet of 240.
Ray Flaws: As a Plate 1b stamp, it typically shows the 10 o'clock ray flaw, wherethe ray at the 10 o'clock position in the upper-left star is either shortenedor entirely missing.
Scrape/Flaw in Left Margin: This is a recognized constant plate variety for thisposition. It often appears as a vertical white mark or "scrape" inthe left margin area, outside the design.
Star White Flaw: A "white flaw" in one of the upper stars (often thenorth-east star) is common in Plate 1b due to the extensive overhaul and re-entryof the plate to fix wear issues.
Re-cut Letter Squares: After the plate was repaired (moving from state 1a to1b), the corner letter squares were often re-cut or strengthened, leaving visibledifferences in the frame lines around the "R" and "D".
Very desirable stamp.
