The Great Britain 1840 1d Black (Penny Black) lettered "L-I" from Plate 1a is a significant philatelic variety known for a specific manual repair made to the printing plate. On this specific stamp, the lower left corner square containing the letter "L" was re-cut by hand.

Re-cut Corner: The "L" in the bottom left square shows evidence of hand-engraving. This occurred because the original impression on the un-hardened plate wore down quickly, requiring manual strengthening.
