GB QUEEN VICTORIA 1840, 1d BLACK PENNY, SG V1, VR|HH
ABOUT THE STAMP
This is the one of the rarest and most significant items in British philately: the 1840 1d Black "V.R." This stamp was created specifically for official government correspondence, intended to be used with the Mulready envelopes, but was never officially issued to the public. It features "V" and "R" in the upper corners instead of the traditional stars.
Key Details: Printed: Only 3,323 sheets were initially produced, but all except 21 sheets were destroyed in 1843, making survivors extremely scarce.
Imprimatur Value: A very fine unused imperforate imprimatur (like the one lettered 'TI' or 'NL' in recent listings) can fetch between £20,000 and £48,000 if not more.
" V.R." Official: This is not a standard Penny Black (SG1/SG2), which is common. The V.R. Official is highly specialized. Lettering 'HH': The specific letter combination 'HH' would refer to a particular plate position on the sheet. The letters H-H on an 1840 Penny Black designate its specific position on the printed sheet as the 8th row, 8th column. The Penny Black was printed in sheets of 240 stamps, arranged in 20 rows and 12 columns. A coordinate system was used to prevent forgery and identify each stamp's location:
Left-hand Letter (Row): Indicates the horizontal row, running alphabetically from A (1st row) to T (20th row). Since 'H' is the 8th letter of the alphabet, it represents the 8th row.
Right-hand Letter (Column): Indicates the vertical column, running alphabetically from A (1st column) to L (12th column). As 'H' is the 8th letter, it represents the 8th column.
For the rare SG V1 "V.R." OFFICIAL, the lettering system remains the same as the standard Penny Black. Having lettered HH means that specific stamp occupied the 92nd position on the original sheet of 240. Because these stamps were individually hand-punched, the exact position and tilt of the letters H and H within their respective corner squares are unique to that position on the plate. Experts use these "plating" characteristics to verify if a stamp is a genuine SG V1 or a clever forgery made from a common Penny Black. Very very attractive and highly valued stamp.
