GB QUEEN VICTORIA, 1d INTENSE BLACK, PLATE 2, A-L, RAY FLAW, RED MALTESE CROSS
ABOUT THE STAMP
Plate 2 was one of the earliest used, registered on 22 April 1840. It is distinguished by the ray flaws in the upper left corner star, specifically at the 7 o'clock and 10 o'clock positions. While some stamps on Plate 2 had these flaws restored during repairs, they are common on early impressions.
Intense Black Shade: This scarce shade (categorised as SG Spec AS14) is associated with very early printings, often from early May 1840. It is typically valued at a premium (often 50% or more) compared to the standard black shade.
Lettering A-L: Denotes the stamp's position in the top row (Row A) and the 12th column (Column L) of the 240-stamp sheet.
Cancellation: A red Maltese Cross was the standard cancellation used during the early months of issue (1840 to early 1841).
