GB QUEEN VICTORIA 1840, 1d BLACK PENNY, PLATE 1, O FLAW, 4 MARGIN, IF, MALTESE CROSS
ABOUT THE STAMP
Characteristics & "O" Flaw Clarification:
Plate 1 (a or b): Plate 1 was the first used and wore down so quickly that it was repaired, resulting in two states: 1a (original) and 1b (repaired). Specimens from Plate 1 typically show "Ray Flaws" in the North West star, where certain rays are missing or shortened.
The "O" Flaw: There appears to be a slight contradiction in your search criteria regarding the plate. Traditionally, the famous "O" Flaw (where the 'O' in 'ONE' looks like a 'Q') is a characteristic found on Plates 7, 8, 9, and 10. While some auction listings may use the term "O flaw" loosely for other plates, it is not a standard plating characteristic for Plate 1.
4 Margins: For imperforate stamps like the Penny Black, having four clear margins significantly increases value because they were originally hand-cut with scissors, often resulting in designs being "cut into".
Maltese Cross (MX): A Red Maltese Cross is the most common cancellation for Plate 1. A Black Maltese Cross is scarcer on early plates like Plate 1 and generally commands a higher price.
