ABOUT THE STAMPS

Great Britain 1841 1d Red-Brown, Imperforate, Die I, Alphabet I, Check Letters M-C, SG 8, three Margins: Penny Reds were printed in sheets of 240 stamps , configured so that a full sheet equaled exactly one pound sterling (£1) in face value. The grid was organized alphabetically:

  • Rows (First Letter): Run vertically from A to T (20 rows total).
    • The letter M is the 13th letter of the alphabet, placing this stamp in Row 13.
  • Columns (Second Letter): Run horizontally from A to L (12 columns total, totaling 12 pence or 1 shilling per row).
    • The letter C is the 3rd letter of the alphabet, placing this stamp in Column 3.

Letter M is shifted heavily to the right and touching the right frame of its box narrows down the possibilities significantly to plate 19, 26, 40 and 73:

Analysing the 177 plates used for the imperforate issues, only a handful feature an "M" punched so far to the right that it pushes right against the enclosing frame:

  1. Plate 40: Known for having the letter M punched high and noticeably to the right, sitting very close to or touching the right inner frame of the letter square.
  2. Plate 26: Features a distinctively wide and right-shifted M position where the right leg of the letter sits flat against the right border.
  3. Plate 73: A later imperforate plate where the M tool was applied carelessly to the right. However, Plate 73 typically features a slightly more cantered "C" than what is seen here.

Plate 19: An early plate variant where the letter M is tilted slightly and leans heavily toward the right-hand frame line.
