ABOUT THE STAMPS

Great Britain 1841 1d Penny Red (Imperforate)

SG 8 Plate 18 (AS46) or BS 7e

line-engraved postage stamp featuring the profile of Queen Victoria. The stamp is printed on blued paper (as clearly shown by the blue tint on the reverse side).B-G (positioned in the lower corners, indicating its placement on the printing sheet).

  • Cancellation: A crisp, central Number 8 in Maltese Cross postmark from the London Head Office. The central loop of the numeral "8" is distinctively shaped like an hourglass, typical of this specific numbered cross strike. The Stanley Gibbons catalogue value for a standard Number 8 in Maltese Cross (SG 8m) sits at around £160.
  • The stamp variety is BS 7e, State 2 (repaired by re-entry, Value of this variety alone is £250.
  • The Left "B" Square Horizontal Profile: The left vertical stroke of the letter B sits roughly 75 pixels away from the left inner border wall. The rounded right loops of the B sit almost flush, only 5 to 10 pixels away from the right wall. This distinct shift to the right is the dominant signature trait. Vertical Profile: The top loop and baseline loop are perfectly level, showing an even 30 pixels of clearance on both the top and bottom. The Right "G" Square Horizontal Profile: The curved left back of the G sits tightly against the left inner frame wall (roughly 10 to 15 pixels away), while the right open mouth of the G has a spacious 60+ pixel gap separating it from the right frame wall. Vertical Profile: The letter sits nearly cleanly upright with tilt to left 5+ pixel. The reverse image of the stamp confirms a definitive "Ivory Head" offset effect. Underneath the strong, uniform chemical blue tint of the paper, the profile of Queen Victoria’s head shows through distinctly as a pale, whitish silhouette where the heavy ink coverage on the front shielded the paper from reacting fully with the chemical wash.

If you are collecting Maltese Crosses, there are from 1-12

The stamp remains a highly collectible and crisp three-margin reference piece of Victorian postal history!
