ABOUT THE STAMPS
Great Britain 1841 1d Penny Red (Imperforate)
SG 8 Plate 23 (SG BS 12) or SG 8f / 8m Series
line-engraved postage stamp featuring the profile of Queen Victoria. The stamp is printed on blued paper (as clearly shown by the blue tint on the reverse side).Stanley Gibbons Number (SG#): SG 8, Plate 23 (The definitive 1841 1d Red-Brown or Deep Red-Brown imperforate on blued paper).
Lettering Combination: L-L (positioned at the 12th row, 12th column of the printing sheet).
Cancellation Type: Maltese Cross (Black Ink).
Reverse Side: Completely clean with visible ink penetration/show-through from the front cancel.
Margins: 4 Full and Clear Margins. The stamp has been neatly cut from the sheet without clipped frame lines, which is excellent for an imperforate classic issue.
Paper Condition: Shows typical "blueing," a chemical reaction where the Prussian blue ink components reacted with the damp paper pulp during the printing process.
To pinpoint this stamp correctly using exact letters coordinates a definitive match requires overlaying your stamp against the specialized reference sheets
The Left "L" Box Alignment:
Bottom left square. The letter L is punched a bit high up, still not sitting very close to the top border of the small frame box, with clear white space underneath its baseline. It also tilts slightly to the right.
The Right "L" Box Alignment:
In the bottom-right square, the letter L is positioned lower down as in the left box and is visible with naked eyes shifted approx. 15 degrees toward the right frame line.
No Ray Flaw:
The top-left star has fully formed rays, meaning it bypasses the plates damaged by defective rollers in the mid-1840s.
The bottom-right corner frame is straight and intact. This rules out specific plates known for structural anomalies, such as Plate 19, which is famous among line-engraved collectors for showing a distinctly skewed or distorted outer frame line around the southeast square
If you are collecting Maltese Crosses, there are from 1-12
The stamp remains a highly collectible and crisp three-margin reference piece of Victorian postal history!
