GB QUEEN VICTORIA 1858, 2d BLUE, SG 47, Plate 14, FH-HF, MALTA CDS, USED
ABOUT THE STAMPS
Early British line-engraved stamps featured a tracking coordinate system to deter forgery and monitor the sheets.
- Bottom Corners (F - H): The bottom-left letter F represents the vertical row (the 6th letter of the alphabet), and the bottom-right letter H represents the horizontal column (the 8th letter). This means your stamp occupied Row 6, Column 8 on a giant sheet of 240 stamps.
- Top Corners (H - F): In alignment with the 1858 four-corner letter design changes, the top corners mirror and invert the bottom coordinates. The top-left corner displays an H and the top-right displays an F.
Plate 14 represents one of the final printing runs used to produce the engraved 2d Blue stamps before they transitioned to new designs. You can easily verify your stamp's origin by looking closely at the detailed, engine-turned lace frameworks flanking Queen Victoria's face. The number 14 is delicately engraved vertically into both the left and right border pillars.
Malta CDS (Used Abroad)
While a standard UK-cancelled Plate 14 copy is quite common, the Malta CDS elevates its desirability significantly.
- "Used Abroad" Postal History: During the Victorian era, British stamps were officially sent out and used at British post offices located overseas in Mediterranean ports, colonies, and naval bases.
- Malta A25 / CDS: British stamps used in Malta were typically cancelled with an "A25" barred numeral obliterator or an official Circular Date Stamp (CDS). A clear, readable Malta CDS cancellation proves the stamp was processed directly through the island's postal system, making it a cross-collectible piece prized by both Great Britain specialists and Mediterranean postal historians.
