GB KING EDWARD VII, 1906, 5d SLATE PURPLE & ULTRAMARINE, Sg.242a, Mi.110Ix, MM
ABOUT THE STAMPS
This represents the distinct dull purple-brown specialist shade. The frame has a noticeably deeper, warmer brown tint mixed into the purple pigment, while retaining the typical De La Rue blue ink for the "5d" tablets. This back features strong pencil markings, including a dealer note reading "244" (which is the SG number for the 5d Dull Purple and Cobalt variant) and an expertizing/collector mark "PH". It shows clear Mint Mounted / Hinged (MM) evidence near the top.
The slightly smoother texture under the gum suggests this could be the Chalk-Surfaced Paper variant (SG 243a).
The pencil marks and hinging keep this firmly in the Mint Mounted bracket, valued around £50 – £65. (Be aware: If verified as the rarer SG 244 cobalt shade as the pencil note suggests, the catalogue value spikes significantly).
