GB KING EDWARD VII, 1906, 5d DULL-REDDISH PURPLE and ULTRAMARINE, Sg.242, Mi.110Ix, MM
ABOUT THE STAMPS
This is the deeper, darker slate-purple De La Rue shade. The frame has a heavy, muted, greyish undertone (slate element) making it look much darker and colder than the other three stamps, contrasted against the standard blue tablet base.
This stamp has a large, prominent disturbed gum patch or hinge stain taking up the upper-middle section of the reverse. It is a heavily Mint Mounted (MM) example.
In the standard Stanley Gibbons Concise Catalogue , the basic color listed for SG 242 is officially Dull Purple and Ultramarine.
- What the Standard Concise says: SG 242 is simply called Dull Purple and Ultramarine.
- What the Specialised Catalogue says: The specialized listing breaks SG 242 down into sub-shades. The darker, colder variant you have on the far right is catalogued specifically as M29(4) Slate-Purple.
