1945 U-BOOT HELA, MILITARY FELDPOST, Mi.13b MNH
ABOUT THE STAMPS
The 1945 Hela Submarine Issue (known as U-Boot Hela) refers to a rare German military field post (Feldpost) stamp created in March 1945. It was specifically designed for troops of the 31st Infantry Division (later the 31st Volksgrenadier Division) who were trapped by the Red Army in the Hela Peninsula pocket near Danzig (now Gdańsk, Poland).
Purpose: The stamp was intended to allow soldiers in the encircled Hela pocket to send one letter home via submarine, which was thought to be the only safe remaining supply line.
Design & Production: Designed by Bruno Paetsch of Danzig and printed by the 31st Division's mapping unit using an offset lithography process. It was printed on leftover map paper in sheets of 150, imperforated and without gum.
Michel Catalog Variants: Listed under Michel numbers MiNr. 13a, 13b, and 13c, representing three major colour varieties:
13a: Pale/Light Blue.
13b: Blue.
13c: Grey Blue.
Historical Usage: Although 150,000 were printed, they were never used as intended because surface naval vessels continued to reach Hela until the surrender on 8 May 1945.
