GB QUEEN VITORIA 1857, ERROR, 4d ROSE-CARMIN, Sg.66, Used
ABOUT THE STAMPS
The lettering of "POSTAGE" and "FOUR PENCE" is cleanly struck, with no double impressions or ink omissions. However, on close inspection of the top banner, there is a distinct white mark in the rose-coloured ink between the letters P and O in the word POSTAGE.
This is a textbook example of a printing flaw. I sent the stamp to the BPA for certification, but it was returned to me in the same condition in which I had sent it. I wanted it to be certified because Stanley Gibbons does not officially recognise the mark between the P and O on SG 66 as a constant plate variety or a "major error". A constant plate error occurs when a physical scratch or dent affects the copper printing plate itself, causing exactly the same flaw to recur on every sheet printed from that position. Therefore, I assume that this error between the P and O of POSTAGE appeared on, for example, only 100 sheets.
