GB QUEEN VICTORIA 1855/64, 1d RED BROWN SG 43/44, Pl.97, DJ-JD, Used
ABOUT THE STAMPS
A standard Great Britain Victoria 1d Penny Red from Plate 97 (catalogued as SG 43 or SG 44) is not inherently rare or expensive. It is one of the most common plates from the 1858–1879 line-engraved series. Millions of these stamps were produced, and a normal used example can typically be purchased. However, specific stamp could be highly valuable or "special" if it has any of the following specific varieties, errors, or premium characteristics:
- Inverted Watermark Variety (SG 43wi / SG 44wi). The most notable catalogued error for Plate 97 is an inverted watermark. These examples are highly sought after by collectors and sell as errors for significantly more, around £50 or more depending on condition.
- Rare Commercial Underprints, where during the Victorian era, some large businesses printed their names on the back of stamps before using them to prevent employee theft. A known specialty variety for Plate 97 includes the official "Copestake Moore Crampton & Co. London" underprint on the reverse.
