ABOUT THE STAMPS
Plate 48 is highly celebrated among specialized British line-engraved collectors. If a specialist confirms an SG 40 specimen is manually plated to Plate 48, they immediately check for a couple of major characteristics:
  • The Extended Left Frame Line Variety: Plate 48 is famous for a notable printing variety where the outer vertical frame line on the left side was accidentally cut or worn down too far, causing it to extend visibly past the top or bottom corner margins on specific sheet positions.
  • The "Short J" Stamp Lettering: Because the letter punches were hammered into the copper and steel plates by hand, the letter J on Plate 48 positions often exhibits a noticeably shorter, flatter hook variant compared to standard Alphabet III styles found on adjacent plates.
  • Collectability Premium: Plate 48 sits right in the sweet spot of the late 1857 definitive printings. Because it shows distinct structural wearing, reconstructing a full 240-stamp sheet of Plate 48 commands a solid premium over basic, standard plates from the same era
