GB QUEEN VITORIA 1841, 1d RED-BROWN, Sg.42, Pl.50, K-H, Used
ABOUT THE STAMPS
Great Britain 1841 1d Red-Brown, Perforated, Die II, Alphabet IV, Perf 14, Letters K-H, SG 42, Plate 50.
Letters: K-H.
- Bottom Corners: Left corner shows K, right corner shows H (spelling out KONE PENNY H).
- Top Corners: Left corner shows H, right corner shows K (the reverse order of the bottom corners).
Sheet Position: This stamp represents position 116 on a standard 240-stamp sheet (Row K is the 11th row, and column H is the 8th column; 12 × 10 + 8 = 116).
The Red Cancel: The letter was posted at a tiny, rural local sub-office or processed via an incoming regional "cross-post" route nearby. Lacking the updated black ink or proper equipment, this secondary clerk stamped the bottom left corner with a red ink handstamp.
Transit (The Black Cancel): The letter travelled from the rural post into the main regional Head Post Office at Barnstaple.
The Final Strike: To comply strictly with standard Post Office regulations, the Barnstaple postmaster struck the stamp heavily with the official "19" black barred obliteration hammer to ensure it could never be cleaned and reused, inadvertently creating a beautiful double-cancellation variety.IMPORTANT INFORMATION
