ABOUT THE STAMPS

Because early plates suffered structural wear from this high-pressure friction, Plate 11 developed very distinct, specialized printing anomalies.

Plate 11 has a distinct, small physical break or gap in the outer frame line of the upper-right corner square.

  • The vertical outer frame line running down the entire right side of the stamp is noticeably thin and faint compared to other early plates.
  • If a stamp has an "E" punch in its corner box, Plate 11 features a uniquely broad, wide-set "E".
  • Unlike Plates 7, 8, 9, and 10 which feature the famous "O flaw" (where the "O" in "ONE PENNY" is damaged at the bottom with a lump of white ink), Plate 11 has a cleanly shaped, perfectly intact "O"
  • Looking closely at the top right star corner of this stamp, the frame line appears quite solid and joined, rather than showing the classic Plate 11 break.
  • The right frame line is quite bold and sharp, which contrasts with the typically weak, fading right line associated with Plate 11.
  • In the Stanley Gibbons Concise Catalogue, SG 7 and SG 8 is a standalone, master catalogue number reserved specifically for Penny Reds printed from the recycled Penny Black plates (Plates 1b, 2, 5, 8, 9, 10, and 11).
  • If we dive into the highly detailed Stanley Gibbons Great Britain Specialised Catalogue (Volume 1), the "SG 7" designation expands into a complex system of highly specific specialized sub-numbers based on exact plates, printing anomalies, and postmarks.
  • In the bottom-left corner, there is a tiny, purple stamped symbol (resembling a rosette or flower). Historically, wealthy collectors, auction houses, or expertizing bodies would lightly stamp the back of high-quality or verified items to guarantee authenticity or show ownership
  • This stamp has quite a few errors, specially flaws.
