ABOUT THE STAMPS

Plate 27 was constructed and put into use around 1842 to 1843 by the prominent security printing firm Perkins Bacon. This plate is highly regarded by philatelic specialists for a couple of distinct visual markers:

  • Plate 27 is famous for having visible horizontal or vertical "guide lines" scratched into the steel sheet by the engravers to help layout the rows evenly. Traces of these lines frequently show up across the corner letter squares of stamps from this run.
  • Because individual hand-punches were hit with a mallet to stamp the C and K into the lower corner boxes, their exact orientation is unique to Plate 27. Specialists track these minute differences to reconstruct entire 240-stamp printing sheets.

The black oval cancel on your stamp is a classic London Inland Section barred obliterator postmark.

  • Introduced in May 1844, these barred cancels were designed to cleanly cover Queen Victoria’s face so the stamp could never be peeled off a letter and illegally reused.
  • The central number 9 was not a zip code; it was a clerical desk assignment code. Sorting mail at the massive London Head Office was decentralized. Specific clerks or desks were designated a specific number stamp (ranging upwards from 1) to process high volumes of standard or heavy mail bags.

In philately, the value of an imperforate Penny Red depends heavily on its "margins" (how much of the white paper border shows around the red design frame) and the clarity of the cancellation.

  • Plate 27 is a standard, widely collected plate from the core production period.
  • Depending its condition value would be around up to £40.
