GB QUEEN VICTORIA 1858, 2d Sg.35, Pl.6, J-D, Alphabet III, Used
ABOUT THE STAMPS
GB Queen Victoria 1858, SG 35, Plate 6. Quite nice example of Queen Victoria 1858, 2d Blue SG 35, Plate 6, on rather white/cream paper, Perforated 14, Large Crown Watermark.
Why Plate 6 and not 5? Features a distinctly long, slender tail that curves smoothly upward, often terminating in a sharp, clear top serif and an elongated, tall D with a fine vertical line and well-proportioned, open curves that leave plenty of white space inside the letter loop is pointing to Plate 6 including the Alphabet III. Plate 5 comes with Alphabet II on top of which Plate 6 typically lacks rougher positioning guidelines, featuring much cleaner, more standardized frame borders.
Letters row – letter J represents the 10th row down on the sheet while letter D represents the 4th column from the left.
While a few numbers were reassigned if a Post Office closed down, Bilston held onto the 73 designations continuously through the printings of the 1840s, 1850s, and 1860s . Much later in the 20th century (around 1934), the number 73 was assigned to Billingham in Durham.
