GB QUEEN VICTORIA 1855/64, 1d RED BROWN SG29, Plate 36, C-J, Used
ABOUT THE STAMPS
GB QUEEN VICTORIA 1855-1864, 1 Penny Red, SG 29 / 36, Plate 36, Perf 14, Alphabet II, Die II
The artisan punch on "J" shifted slights as it was struck into the cooper/steel matrix. The vertical backbone of the letter "J" has a clear, distinct tilt leaning to the right (towards the outer frame of the stamp), rather than sitting straight or leaning left.
Because it comes from the same plate layout, the "C" should appear cleanly cantered or floating just a hair higher up in its square box.
Finding a cleanly struck Plate 36 on the Large Crown, Perforation 14 setup (Stanley Gibbons SG 29 / 36 Series) explains exactly why the old collector or dealer pulled it out at the back where he wrote "10 S" > 10 Shillings.
Plate 36 is highly prized because it captures the exact technical turning point where the post office was aggressively tweaking printing alignments before abandoning the "Star" corner layout entirely.
