GB QUEEN VICTORIA 1855/64, 1d RED BROWN SG 38, Plate 61, Q-E, Used
ABOUT THE STAMPS
GB Queen Victoria SG 38 Plate 61(Die II, Alphabet III, Large Crown Watermark, Perforation 14).
Stars: The design features stars in both the top-left and top-right corners, confirming that this belongs to the classic "Penny Red Star" perforated eras. There are no corner letters at the top.
Letter Position: Q-E. The bottom-left square displays a distinct Q and the bottom-right square displays an E. Under the 240-stamp sheet arrangement, this specific pairing fixes the stamp's placement to Row 17 (Q), Column 5 (E) of the printing sheet.
Cancellation: The stamp features a crisp, horizontal "12" barred numeral cancellation. In the standard 1844 Post Office allocation system for England and Wales, the code number 12 is designated to the town of Altrincham, Cheshire (originally operating under the parent office of Manchester).
Plate Number: This stamp was printed within the range of Plates 27 to 61 (excluding 50 and 51). Because early "Star" issues lack engraved plate numbers in the frame borders, isolating the precise plate requires a philatelic plating guide to calculate the exact horizontal alignment and manual punch characteristics of the "Q" and "E" punches.
Special SG Number: SG Specialised C10 (Perf 14).
