Because of Sarawak’s location in Southeast Asia and its close trading ties with Singapore and Hong Kong, they used the Sarawak Dollar, which was pegged directly to the Straits Settlements Dollar (and later the Malayan Dollar).
This particular $1 value was actually the second-highest denomination issued in the entire series (surpassed only by the ultra-rare $2 green and carmine stamp issued standardly in the same era).
Mint never hinged with original gum.
