1883 TOBAGO - BRITISH COLONY, 2.5d STONE-BROWN, SG 13, OVERPRINT, MNH
ABOUT THE STAMPS
The 1883 2.5d (two and a half pence) Tobago stamp is a rare and notable piece of philatelic history from the British Commonwealth. Issued during the reign of Queen Victoria, it is highly valued by stamp collectors today
Country: Tobago (British Colony)
Year of Issue: 1883
Denomination: 2½d (Two pence, halfpenny)
Catalogue Reference: Stanley Gibbons #13 (SG 13)
Type: Overprint
In 1883, the colony of Tobago needed 2½d stamps but ran short. To solve this, they took existing 6d stone-coloured stamps featuring Queen Victoria's profile and surcharged them with a "2½d" overprint.
Because these were temporary measures created by printing new values onto old stock, they are much harder to find than regular issues.
